Matthew Alexander is a landscape painter, print maker and
teacher. The son of the artist
Christopher Alexander and older brother of painter Gregory Alexander, he
studied at Canterbury College of Art and in the graphic design department of
Maidstone College of Art. With his
brother he also studied at evening classes run by his father at Hilderstone College of Further Education, formerly Thanet
School of Art, eventually replacing his father as tutor in figure drawing. He took the post of art teacher at Hartsdown Secondary School in his home town of Margate,
Kent, teaching his brother for a time.
He eventually combined travelling for landscape painting with running a
business producing limited edition prints of his watercolours. He was elected an associate of the Royal
Institute of Oil Painters in 1982 and a Member of the Royal Society of British
Artists in 1984. He has also shown at
the Royal Academy and in 1992 shared a show with Gregory at the Catto Gallery which stemmed from extensive travels in
Europe. He, his brother and father have
held three-man exhibitions in the Margate area and in 1989 there was a Kent
Country Library touring show of all their work.
Matthew Alexander’s work has developed to become cooler, more detached
and subtle-tones. Choice of subject is a
key feature, as is the relationship of buildings to landscapes. He has shown at major London Galleries
