Clifford
Fishwick was a painter and teacher. He
was born on 21st June 1923 near Accrington, Lancashire and was educated at Chester Grammar School. He attended Liverpool
School of Art from 1940 to 1942 and then, after Naval service, returned to
complete his studies from 1946 to 1947, including an art teacher's diploma.
Fishwick combined a busy painting career with teaching at Exeter College of
Art, and was Principal from 1958 to
1984. He was a Member of the Newlyn
Society from 1952 to 1983 and exhibited at the Penwith Society in the 1950s and
1960s and had a solo show in 1983. He
also showed solo at St. George's Gallery in 1957, others including Dartington
Hall, 1959; Exeter University, 1961; John Moore's Exhibition, Bradford Art
Gallery; Plymouth City Art Gallery, 1966; Essex University, 1976; Spacex
Gallery, Exeter, 1982; Exeter Museum; Greenwich Theatre and works of the 1950s
at Austin /Desmond Fine Art in 1989, with other works in 1990. He also showed with Bruton Street
Gallery. Over the years Fishwick's style
changed as certain influences took effect, the Neo-Romantics, the Cornish
painters and the second School of Paris
painters such as Nicolas de Stael. His
later work was darker, more loosely put together and more abstract. Public Galleries in Exeter, Plymouth
and Bradford hold examples of work by Clifford Fishwick, and work by him has
been purchased by the South West Electricity Board and Schools and Elmslie
Philip Collection. Christchurch, Oxford and Exeter University also have work by Clifford Fishwick. He lived at Topsham in Devon and was
married to the painter Patricia Fishwick.
