Peter Ford was born in Hereford in 1937. He studied art at Hereford College of Art and
Brighton College of Art, with additional training at London University
Department of Education. He is largely
self-taught as a maker of prints. From 1961 to 1976 he taught art
and English but has been involved full-time in artistic endeavours since
1979. He is a Fellow of the Royal
Society of Painter-Printmakers, Vice President of the Royal West of England
Academy and Member of the International Association of Papermaking
Artists. Since 1987 he has been Artistic
Director of the Off-Centre Gallery in Bristol specialising in international
art on paper. From 1976 to the end of 1993 he concentrated on paintings, lino cuts,
relief prints and etchings. Since 1994
he has focused on making monotypes and collagraphs from wood and found
materials. In addition, in recent years
he has produced artists’ books and artworks with hand cast and recycled paper,
as well as woodcuts and etchings. His
work has been selected for many international exhibitions, particularly in Poland. In 2006 his woodcuts on handmade paper
received the prize of the Mayor of Krakow in the International Print Triennial,
Poland. He has also won several other prizes
including Krakow Triennial Society Lifetime achievement award and medal;

Open Print Exhibition, Mall Galleries, London – Intaglio Prize; British Open
Print Exhibition, Mall Galleries, London – John Purcell Paper Prize; Royal West

Page, Book Arts Exhibition, Hawaii, U.S.A. – Honolulu Printmakers Award;
British Open Print Exhibition, London – Wookey Hole Papermill Prize and the
International World of Ex-libris, Belgrade Prize as well as 20 other prizes
awarded since 1977. His long term
interest in Japanese art lead to the organising of exhibitions as part of the
Japan 2001 Festival, opening at Bristol City Museum, then later shown at the
Bankside Gallery, London and Usher Gallery in Lincoln. Awards include Tianjin (China) International
ex-libris and graphic exhibition – medal; Birgit Skiold Memorial Trust –
project award; The Lark Trust – travel award (Korea); Daiwa Anglo-Japanese
Foundation – research award for MADE IN JAPAN, Japanese paperworks exhibition;
Visiting Arts – project research award (Russia); SW Arts Training Grant –
Visiting Arts Development Grant; Gane Charitable Trust Training Grant (Canada) and Arts Council Project
Development Travel Grant (Poland). He has participated in International Group
Exhibitions in China, Vienna, Germany, Poland, Taiwan, Tokyo, Turkey, New York, France, Norway, Mexico and U.S.A. and has exhibited in many
exhibitions in England in London, Bristol, Bath and Wales including several solo
shows. Work by Peter Ford is included in
public collections in many countries including Musee de la Publicite, Paris;
Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art; Museum of Art, Portland, Oregon;
Kalinigrad Art Gallery, Russia; the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Bristol City
Museum and Art Gallery; Taipei Art Museum, Taiwan; Pan Asia Paper Museum,
Jeonju, Republic of Korea; Tate Gallery Collection of Artists’ Books and the
Victoria and Albert Museum – Department of Word and Image and other public
collections in England, Scotland, Ireland, Slovakia, Russia and Egypt.
