Axel Herman Haig was an etcher of more than 400 plates, a lithographer
and water artist of architectural subjects.
He was born in 1835 at Katthamra on the island of Gotland off the Swedish coast. He studied naval architecture at the Swedish
Naval Dockyard and later worked at Port Glasgow under the ship builder Laurence
Hill. He later moved to London where he worked for William
Burges A.R.A. He was elected Member of
the Royal Society of Painter Etchers and Engravers in 1881 where he exhibited some 151 works. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of
Artists Birmingham, Dudley Galleries, Dowdeswell Galleries, the Fine Art
Society, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute. He
worked in Spain, France, Sicily and Italy, mainly cathedrals and
similar subjects. Although he was born
in Sweden, he lived for many years in
Haslemere, Surrey but always returned to Sweden for holidays where he was a
member of the Royal Swedish Academy. He was also the first instructor of the
artist Anders Zorn (1860 – 1920). He
died on 21st January 1921.
