Helen
Hale was born in 1936 in Hertfordshire and educated at St. George's School,
Harpenden. For fifteen years she combined a career in book publishing with
part-time study at St. Martin's School of Art and the Sir John Cass School of
Art. Since 1970 she has worked full-time
on painting and sculpture, exhibiting in Paris and at the Royal Scottish
Academy and the Royal West of England Academy as well as in many group shows in
London and the provinces. One person shows have been held at Everyman Foyer
Gallery, London in 1972, St. Blaise Gallery, Stockwell College in 1975 and the
Lizard Gallery, Farnham in 1987 (with Horne Shepherd). She is a Member of The
Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the National Society of Painters, Sculptures
and Printmakers, the Society of Women Artists and the Free Painters and
Sculptors. A recent project has been the editing of a book entitled The Art and
Artists Quotation Book due to be published in November by Robert Hale Limited.
She has lived in West Sussex for over twenty years and was married to the
Scottish Artist Horne Shepherd who died in 1993.
