Sidney Horne Shepherd was born in Dundee, Scotland and studied at Dundee
School of Art from 1924 to 1926 and Glasgow School of Art from 1926 to
1927. In 1927 he won a travelling
scholarship. From 1929 to 1954 he taught
at Shoreditch Training College, also at Ealing School of
Art from 1956 to 1966 and St. Martin's School of Art from 1945 to 1975. He exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy;
the Royal Institute of Fine Arts; the Society of Scottish Painters;
Contemporary Scottish Art, Leicester Gallery; the Redfern Gallery; St.
George's; the Royal Society of British Artists; the London Group, the
Senefelder Club; the Royal Institute of Oil Painters; the National Society of
Painters, Sculptors and Printmakers; Victoria and Albert Museum (150 Years of
Lithography, 1948); and many other mixed exhibitions, plus one-man shows as
follows:- Dundee, Scotland (1932); Glasgow (1932-33); Contemporary Scottish
Art, Washington (1939); Everyman Foyer Gallery, Hampstead (1958); La
Babuinetta, Rome (April 1959 and October 1959); Everyman Foyer Gallery,
Hampstead (1960); Richmond Hill Gallery (1961); Monseigneur, Marble Arch
(1961); Hyde Park Gallery (1961); New End Gallery, Hampstead (1963); Everyman
Foyer Gallery, Hampstead (1972); Grassroots Gallery, Durban (1983); Lizard
Gallery, Farnham (with Helen Hale in 1987).
