Alfred Stockham, painter in oils and watercolour, was born in London. After six years serving in the Royal Navy, he
attended the Camberwell School of Art from 1960 to 1963 and the Royal College
of Art from 1963 to 1966. In 1966 he was
awarded a Rome Scholarship and also a Granada Arts Fellowship. He was Head of Fine Art at Bristol
Polytechnic from 1968-88 when he retired to spend more time painting. Awards include a Silver Medal for painting at
the Royal College and a British Institute
First Prize for painting. He has
exhibited in mixed shows at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the London
Group, Bradford City Art Gallery, the Royal Academy Summer
Exhibition. Avon Open Exhibition and Arnolfini Gallery Bristol as well as in Europe and America. He had a solo exhibition at Anthony
Hepworth, Bath in 1992 and at the Royal West of England
Academy in 2004. He has been Honorary
Curator of the R.W.A. Permanent Collection since 2001. His work is held in many public collections
including Bristol City Museum, York University, York City Art Gallery and the Arts Council of
Northern Ireland.
