Edgar John Varley was the son of C.S. Varley (1811 – 1888) and grandson of John Varley (1778 – 1842).  He was a landscape and architectural painter.  He lived in London and exhibited his work at the Royal Academy, the Grosvenor Gallery, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute.   He was Curator of the Archaeological Museum in Westminster.  Examples of work by Edgar John Varley are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and Portsmouth City Museum.
