Eric Waugh, painter and teacher, studied at Croydon School of Art from 1946 to 1950 and at the Royal College of Art from 1950 to 1953. Early influences on his work were the Belgian artist Constant Permeke and Polish born Josef Herman. After studying, Waugh taught at Reigate School of Art and in 1957 was included in Jack Beddington’s survey Young Artists of Promise. He painted diverse subjects and in several styles over the years, including ton-up motorcyclists, cars, horse racing, cyclists, landscapes and abstracts with words and sentences stencilled on them. Waugh claimed that his pictures were related to where he lived: South London, Surrey, Kent, Mexico, Spain (where he owned an old farmhouse) and, latterly, Cornwall. His early 1960s self-portrait is included in Philip Vann’s book Face to Face, published by Sansom and Company/Piano Nobile Fine Paintings in 2004. He exhibited at Roland, Browse & Delbanco
