Joseph Lionel Williams was a painter of genre and historical subjects in oil and watercolour and was also a wood engraver.  He was the son of the artist S. Williams who was also his tutor. He worked for the Illustrated London News and the Art Journal and also illustrated Milton, Byron, Goldsmith and other books.  He exhibited his work at the Royal Academy, the Suffolk Street Galleries, the British Institute and elsewhere from 1834 to 1874.  Examples of his work are in Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield.
