A
large collection of Allen’s work can be seen at the Hampshire County Council’s Allen Gallery in Alton and his work is also
found in the collections of Bradford and Avon Museum;
the Wiltshire Museum, Devizes and Salisbury Museum.
William
Herbert Allen was a painter of landscapes, figures, architectural and
continental subjects, mostly in watercolour.He
studied at the Royal College of Art where he was awarded Gold,
Silver and Bronze medals and a Travelling Scholarship. He was
Principal of the Farnham School of Art and Director of the Study and Teaching
of Art in the Farnham district for Surrey County Council 1904 – 1927. He
travelled widely on the Continent and his work was exhibited at the Royal
Society of British Artists, of which he was a Member,
exhibiting some 310 pictures there. His work was also exhibited at the
Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham, Cooling and Sons
Gallery, Dudley Art Gallery, Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, Manchester City Art
Gallery and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
