Joe Winkelman was born on 20th September 1941 in Keokuk, Iowa, U.S.A.  He studied at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennesse; the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Wharton School of Finance and at the University of Oxford, Ruskin School of Drawing.  He was President of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers from 1989 to 1995, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1996, Honorary Fellow of the Printmakers’ Council of Great Britain in 1987 and Artist in Residence at St John’s College, Oxford in 2004.  He exhibited from 1977 at the following establishments – Keokuk Art Centre, Iowa; Indianapolis Art,  Indiana; the English Gallery, Boston; the Bodkin Gallery, Chipping Norton; Portland Gallery, Manchester; The Oxford Gallery, Oxford; Lockerbie Gallery, Indianapolis; Wenniger Gallery, Rockport; Taler Galerie Fort, Cadaques, Spain;  Artworks, Keokuk, Iowa; the Spencer Gallery, Wellingborough; the Courtyard Gallery, Cheltenham; Arlington Gallery, Bibury; Templeton College, Oxford; Convocation Hall, Sewanee, USA; The Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford; the International School of Graphic Art, Venice; the John Callahan Gallery, Boston; the Craven Gallery, West Tisbury, Massachusetts; The Gallery at Newington House, Charlbury, Oxon and The Gallery and Frame Shop, New Hampton, Iowa.  In 1982 he was awarded second prize at the International Miniature Print Exhibitions in Cadaques, Spain, and in Seoul, Korea.  In 1985 he won the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol prize and in 1999 the Print Club of Albany, New York prize.  He also won prizes at the Connectiicut Graphic ACentre, International Miniature Print Shows in 2001 and 2003.  From 1965 to 2004 he held several teaching posts including Tabora School in Tanzania, East Africa; Lea School, Philadelphia, Oxfordshire Further Education Centre, Charlbury (Art Instructor); Culham College of Education, Oxford University (Degree Tutor) ; Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford University (Degree Tutor); Oxford University Department for Continuing Education (Art Tutor); Sunningwell School of Art (Acting Director and Tutor); Oxford School of Architecture, Brookes University (Drawing Tutor); Stanford University (Drawing Tutor for Oxford Programme) and Ashmolean Mueum, Oxford (Art Instructor), Education Service)
